Day 64 - Happy Trails to You

Date: 9/2/12
Location: Costa de Oro, Costa Rica

Word of the day: Cocos - Coconuts

7am wake up. I get some quality time in with HelpingTurtles.com. Breakfast (oatmeal). I consume the rest of morning with randomness. A little of this a little of that. Lunch (more leftovers). After lunch I head out to continue working on the little various project I have going on. I gather a couple more large logs from the beach (now walking several sectors away to find some quality wood), stake them into the ground by homemade wooden sticks and add dirt to fill in the path in between the logs.

Next I move the appropriate wood to in front of the house in preparation for the new Pretoma Sign that will be displayed outside out house, facing the street. After this, I spend some time on the beach, cleaning trash, driftwood and random coconuts.

This is where the Pretoma Sign will go in front of the house
SIDE-NOTE: There has been this family that has been going on people's property, opening up coconuts, taking the juices, and discarding the coconuts in the same vicinity. This has been creating such an eye sore for people who live on those properties, and plus they are STEALING my young coconuts, I have been watching grow ever so slowly in hopes that I will be able to drink them when they get to the right maturity. Damn them. Granted the first 200M from ocean is all concession land (owned by the municipal/local government) and public space - but come on go to another property that is uninhabited with coconut consumers!
Hatchery Pretoma Sign... just waiting on colored Paint

Dinner (Chicken flavored rice and veggies). Patrol. 7pm I bike solo to north and then south. Nada. Siesta. 12am I head back out for a second patrol, on foot, with Courtney. Nada. It seems that tonight it just wasn't good enough for turtles. Sleep.

Lesson:
  • If you don't, someone else will
  • Easy does it
Food: Leftovers. I give leftover the week rule. Of coarse this rule is always trumped by the smell test. However, this rule does not apply to the fish test: they get 36 hours.
Animals: Lizards, Frogs, Dogs, Crabs, Turkey Vulture

Something I am thankful for: Leftovers. Sometimes things just taste better the next day (chili, vinegar based salads, Mofungo, potatoes)

Something I don't want to admit: I am writing this journal 3 days later and I honestly forgot many of the details. Opps - darn they days for blending into each other.

Total Nest I have saved: 21
Total Nests Poached on my Patrol: 15
Total Turtle Eggs I saved: 2,659
Total Baby Turtles I Released: 40
Days of Rain: 40/60
