Day 33 - I can't do it captain I don't have the power

Date: 8/2/12
Location: Costa de Oro, Costa Rica

Word of the day: No cargando – Not Charging
Turtle Fact:   The seven species that can be found today have been around for 110  million years, since the time of the dinosaurs

9:30am wake up. I sometimes feel guilty about waking up,  but then I remember it’s ok, because I just got 2 sets of 4 hours of sleep. Breakfast. This was our first morning at the new house. Last night’s sleeping was not too bad, a little warmer than I would like, but then again I did not sleep with the window open. However, I must say this place does have two fans in our room. One on the ceiling and the other on a stand that oscillates.

Going through the morning routine, I notice my computer was not charged in the morning – hmmm. I thought I might have unplug my computer cord from the wall to plug in the fan, but that was not the case. My computer was dead, and when plugged into an active wall socket, it would not show any lights at all. This could be bad. I clean the charging terminals on the computer and charger, but nothing still. I use my phone to do look online and see what ol’ Google has to say – well either I have to replace my computer’s battery or my charger. Considering there is not an Apple Store in all of Central America I do not think I will be taking my Mac Book Pro in either to get it looked at. Continuing on my quest for technology aid, I look no farther than FB. Social media, who would have thought. The consensus thought I should just wait it out and let the Universe take it’s coarse and try plugging it in later. Well they were right. Problem avoided for now… Lunch.

After lunch we Chillax around the house and watch a little bit of the Olympics as our food digests. Afterwards, Courtney and I walk down the street to pick up the wheel barrels. While there we pick some additional wood to use for the wheel barrels on the beach – on of favorite things to work on. I dedicate the next hour to updating and improving the “roadway”. At this point in time it was just Matt and I moving sand around. Luckily an hour later, some local Tico’s showed up to give us hand, yippy. We work for another 2 hours. We made a small dent, but not as nearly as much as we have in the past. However I must say we were very effective and efficient for just 4 guys and 2 girls.

SIDENOTE: So I have been tasked with making sure semi-stray dogs do not hang out at the house. This is because we do not want the dogs near the hatchery, turtle eggs or the turtles themselves. Well there happens to be this one female dog (yes cute) that is always sleep in our back porch area. Every time I see her sleeping I have to “shoooo” her away. As I do this, she always just ends up rolling over on her back with her feet in the air. So I physically have to pick her up and move her off the property. Well as we were working on digging the sand, she would join us and lay on the beach and watch us. If we were to stop for a water break, she would walk over and graze our legs in order to be petted, among other cute little gestures. What are we going to do with this one….

Dinner. We were provided with only dried goods and a couple of veggies. Knowing this we made what we could (flavored rice, beans and tomatoes) and it actually turned out great. Patrol. At 7:30pm we headed south on the beach. Unfortunately we did not see any turtles nor any tracks. Fortunately, we did not see any poachers either. Sleep.

Lesson:
  • The best advice/knowledge you can get, is most likely going to be your friends, not experts.
  • If there is a will, there is a way, as long as there is an empty stomach and some ingredients to mix.
Food:  Cereal, Rice, Pasta
Animals: Crabs, Birds, Dogs

Something I am thankful for: Fans – circulating air. I don’t know what it is, but moving air is better than not moving, even if it is the same temperature.  I am a big “fan” of these items to cool us off in times of need.
Something I don't want to admit: The others have already caved-in with liking this dog. I have been holding strong being the bad guy – but I might have to cave. You can teach an old dog new tricks, right?

Days of Rain: 15/29
Total Turtle Eggs I have saved: 533
